Quake in Sumatra, tremors in Malaysia (Update 8)

PETALING JAYA: A powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck off the city of Padang off the coast of southern Sumatra at about 6.17pm on Wednesday, killing at least 21 people, trapping thousands of others and causing tremors as far away as peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.

The earthquake which damaged houses, brought down bridges and buildings and caused fires in Padang, also caused people to evacuate buildings in various towns and cities in Malaysia.

The epicentre of the quake was about 481km southwest of Kuala Lumpur.

At 6.38pm, a temblor measuring 5.5 in magnitude was also recorded 11km north of Padang.

So far, there has been no report of the 300 Malaysian students at Andalas University in Padang being affected by the massive earthquake.

Malaysian Consul-General Fauzi Omar told The Star that he has contacted the Sumatra Barat tourism chief and was told that there is no report of any Malaysians being hurt.

“Well at least the tourism chief’s handset is still working. I have been told the Minangkabau airport in Padang is closed.

“I am trying to leave for Padang tonight. It is a one-hour flight and by road it will take at least one day because of the bad road condition,” Fauzi said.

The Malaysian Embassy in Jakarta is despatching a team to Padang in Sumatra to assist the Consul-General in Medan in checking on the students.

Padang was hardest hit by the earthquake.

“We are sending a team as soon as possible and our Consul-General in Pekan Baru will also be despatched to help,” said Malaysian embassy charge d’affaires Amran Mohamad Zain.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre first issued a tsunami alert for Malaysia (George Town and Port Dickson specifically), Indonesia, India and Thailand, but cancelled it at about 7.31pm.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department monitored the situation from the outset, but did not issue a tsunami warning because no significant waves were generated.

In the JayaOne complex here, reports came in of shaking furniture and swaying fixtures.

In KUALA LUMPUR, Mariam Anis and her colleagues on their 21st-floor office in Plaza Sentral in Jalan Sultan Ismail felt the tremors.

“The tremors were strong and I could feel the building shaking. My colleagues and I did not waste another second and ran towards the emergency stairways to make our way down from the 21st floor.

“It was rather scary,” she said.

Tremors were also felt in the federal administrative capital of PUTRAJAYA. Mohd Kamel Othman, press secretary to Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop, was in his office at the Prime Minister’s Department when he felt the tremors.

“I could literally see the building moving from left to right. Even the flowerpots were shaking. I immediately rallied my colleagues to leave the building.

“My minister also came out of his office as he too could feel the tremors,” he said, adding while he had experienced tremors before, the ones which on Wednesday were stronger.

In GEORGE TOWN, people rushed out of several high-rise buildings in Macallum Street, Tanjung Bungah, Tanjung Tokong, Gurney Drive and the inner city of George Town.

Student C.Y. Khoo, 18, said she decided to walk out from the cinema in Gurney Plaza with her friends after she felt the tremors.

“I feared for my safety. My friends and I decided to get out from the cinema although we like the movie very much,” she said.

A Golden Screen Cinema spokesman said a tremor was felt at about 6.20pm for about 25 seconds.

“Some moviegoers walked out of the cinema but ... generally, the situation was not that serious,” he said.

Penang police chief Deputy Comm Wira Ayub Yaakob said policemen were deployed to monitor the situation.

“My men were on the look-out and would have moved in to help if the need arose,” he said.

Marine Operations Force Region I commander Asst Comm Zainul Abidin Hasan said all his men, both at the base and on patrol, were put on standby.

State secretary Datuk Zainal Rahim Seman said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was concerned about the initial tsunami alert.

“The state directed all relevant departments such as the police to be on standby,” he said.

A State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said they received numerous calls from anxious residents enquiring about the tremors.

However, there were no reports of any injuries or of anybody trapped in lifts or buildings.

In JOHOR BARU, many people rushed out of buildings and the new Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex halted operations abruptly and was evacuated for about 40mins.

This caused massive congestion as thousands of motorists were returning from Singapore after office hours.

Fire and Rescue Department personnel were called in to check the building before operations resumed.

The lanes were later reopened and traffic policemen deployed to control traffic at the complex.

Assistant administrative worker Wong Hook Tuck, 52, who was at his office at level six of Menara Plaza Pelangi, described the tremors as bad.

“The tremors started at around 6.15pm and lasted for about five minutes.

“I felt very dizzy and all my colleagues and I started to evacuate the building as the fire alarm had gone off,” he said.

He said he was in shock and had thought that there was an earthquake in Malaysia.

In Taman Ehsan Jaya, administrative executive Surinder Kaur said she was shocked when the people in her apartment building started running downstairs, saying that there was an earthquake.

“I stay on the second floor and I didn’t feel anything, but my neighbours warned me about the tremors and told me to quickly evacuate,” she said.

She said one of her neighbours was having his dinner at the time and the whole table started to shake, spilling the soup he was eating.

“All of the residents quickly assembled at the ground floor; the tremors lasted for about four minutes,” she said.

In SINGAPORE, residents from Toa Payoh, Woodlands, Bukit Timah, Simei and Kembangan in the eastern part, reported tremors shaking their buildings, The Straits Times reported.

A spokesman from National Environment Agency said it received calls from members of the public from Red Hill, Choa Chu Kang, Changi, Toa Payoh, the city area, Punggol, Sengkang, Sembawang and Pasir Ris.

Kee Ya Ting of Woodlands said she thought her flat was going to collapse.

“I was scared. I live on the 12th floor. I was sitting at my desk when the flat shook and I felt myself swaying from left to right. I thought my flat was going to collapse,” she told the paper.

In PADANG itself, the situation looked dire. Indonesian television reported that hundreds of buildings had collapsed and many people were feared trapped under the rubble.

Footage from Padang showed flattened buildings, with at least one person trapped underneath, a foot sticking out from beneath the debris, The Associated Press reported.

“The earthquake was very strong,” said Kasmiati, who lives on the coast near to the epicenter. “People ran to high ground. Houses and buildings were badly damaged.”

“I was outside, so I am safe, but my children at home were injured,” she said before her cellphone went dead.

The quake triggered a landslide that cut off land transport to the provincial town of Padang Pandang, which lies about 70km north of Padang, said a police officer in the town, who identified himself only as Riko. He said three cars were reportedly hit by the landslide.

Padang, a sprawling low-lying city of around 900,000, was badly hit by an 8.4 magnitude quake in September 2007, when dozens of people died and several large buildings collapsed, AP said.

Power in the city was reportedly cut and telecommunications networks were down or overloaded, making it difficult to get accurate information about the extent of the damage.

“Many buildings are badly damaged, including hotels and mosques,” said Wandono, an official at Meteorology and Geophysic Agency in the capital, Jakarta, citing reports from residents.

He said a steep, sloping riverbank collapsed, houses had toppled and a fire had broken out in buildings on the road to Padang.

Wednesday’s quake comes a day after a quake with a magnitude of between 8.0 and 8.3 in the South Pacific hurled a massive tsunami at the shores of Samoa and American Samoa, flattening villages and leaving at least 99 dead and dozens missing.

The epicenter of Wednesday’s temblor off Indonesia lies several thousand kilometres to the west, on the other side of Australia.

Danger ahead
Geologists have said Padang, which lies near the colliding Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates, is the most likely in the country to fall victim to the next major quake or tsunami, AFP reported.

“There will be aftershocks but it’s difficult to predict whether there will be a bigger quake,” Geological Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Centre head Surono told AFP.

“There are three big volcanoes in West Sumatra -- Merapi, Talang and Tandikat. We fear that this quake might cause volcanic eruptions there,” he said.

Experts have said the city is most at risk from a final segment along the zone shifting to unleash a massive amount of energy.

The zone’s other segments have already cracked, including a large portion off Aceh, at the northern tip of Sumatra, which triggered the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami which killed more than 220,000 people.

Plans for evacuation shelters and improved roads to provide better escape routes from tsunami have mostly not been realised.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

A quake on the main island of Java earlier this month killed 123 people.

New 'Chiggy Wiggy' number Added to Blue Soundtrack

To all A.R.Rahman sir's fans, it puzzled me why all of the sudden a new version of Chiggy Wiggy was released. No, its not another version with Kylie Minogue's voice. Its with a different singer this time, Suzanne D'Mello. Remember the girl who crooned "Aye Baccho" from Ghajini? And many other background scores/songs of A.R.Rahman's.

Click here to listen : http://www.bollywoodhungama.com/movies/audiolisting/13837/index.html

My Verdict? It killed the love i had for Chiggy Wiggy. Chiggy Wiggy's best part was Kylie's voice and thus her portion and ofcource, A.R.Rahman's melodious tune (her portion, again) and funky beats.

Its irony that Kylie's version was also disabled to be heard in this very same website. Anything up? Infact there was a rumour going on that the Producer of the film 'Blue' wants to remove the song Chiggy Wiggy from the film. And they was dissapointed that 'Chiggy Wiggy' didnt bring the hype and fame they thought it would, having Kylie Minogue and A.R.Rahman names being mentioned.

The fumiest thing is that the song is indeed a hit. Many websites rate it Good if not great. The most famous and trustable audio websites rank has Chiggy Wiggy as Number 1. Here are the of the proofs.

All I want to say is, to the concerned party, Kylie Minogue's version was the best, and its not a good idea to remove it from the film or the audio. Suzzane's version is not a good replacement. Kylie is a respected artist and a popular one too. Do not treat her and her song like this.

'Blue' Music Album By A.R.Rahman Review - Dinesh Scaran

'Blue' Music Album By A.R.Rahman Review
By Dinesh Scaran

Music Composed by Oscar Winner A.R.Rahman

The latest Hindi album of Oscar Winner, A.R.Rahman. The first album released post the win of the Oscar award by A.R.Rahman. Seductive by say, addictive by nature.

First thing first. This Music album is from the Yet-to-be-released Hindi film, BLUE which stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan and Katrina Kaif. This movie is being directed by a newbie, Anthony D'Souza. And its riding high on the big cast, and ofcource, with having the music department handled by the double Oscar winner, A.R.Rahman.

Its CD cover has a neat package with lyrics booklet and complete details of the singers and their contribution towards each song. Another factor that needs a special attention is that this album sees the famous singer from Australia, Kylie Minogue rendering a song and appearing on screen for that song. Lets not talk more on the hype and just get to the point, shall we?

The album consists of 7 tracks, and they are

1. Chiggy Wiggy - Kylie Minogue, Suzanne D'Mello & Sonu Nigam
2. Aaj Dil - Shreya Ghoshal & Sukhwinder Singh
3. Fiqrana - Shreya Ghoshal, Vijay Prakash & Neeraj Shridhar
4. Bhoola Tujhe - Rashid Ali
5. Blue Theme - Blaaze, Raqeeb Alam, Sonu Kakkar, Jaspreet Singh, Neha Kakkar & Dilshad
6. Rehnuma - Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam & Neeraj Shridhar
7. Yaar Mila Tha - Udit Narayan & Madhushree

1. Chiggy Wiggy - Kylie Minogue, Suzanne D'Mello & Sonu Nigam

- What should i say? i would definitely say i never enjoyed any number this much so far in this year. It just has a very tasty tune and crispy beats. Kylie has done a fabulous job! She has her style from the way she says " I Chiggy Whiggy with boy.... " "Fella!" Her portion is simply the highlight of the song, i still strongly feel A.R.Rahman should have come up with Chiggy Whiggy version 2, just only with her portion, it would be a treat for those who didnt enjoy Sonu's part. I am one of them, haha. Though its not bad, but i feel it somehow sounded the typical-Hindi-club-number. I seriously felt Sonu was great in his energy, but totally turned off my likes for him in the song with his desi-slang "ChiGGEE whiGGEEE". His part had the typical Bhangra flavor, and i can see Kylie had nothing much to do then. But one thing I can be very sure, its going to be a HUGE HIT among the youngsters in clubs and parties.

Rating : 8/10

2. Aaj Dil - Shreya Ghoshal & Sukhwinder Singh

- A very energetic song which starts with the gibberish " Oh Yasa.. Ma Yasa..... Sa Yasa... So Yassa". Then the guitar riffs comes along. And the song takes off with Sukhwinder Singh giving his shot. And Piano too joins in along with Shreya Goshal singing her portion. Shreya sounds awfully sweet. Whats really addictive and mesmerising in this song is that after Shreya's intro, the "Uuuuuuuuu" along with the Piano's game behind. Just wanna make you stand up and give a bow to A.R.Rahman. The first interlude is somehow like the element water being played playfully, but very softly, but expressed musically. You get me right? Haha. Then the "Uuuuu" comes here and there throughout the song which will linger in your mind for a very long time, even after the song has stopped.

Ratings : 9/10

3. Fiqrana - Shreya Ghoshal, Vijay Prakash & Neeraj Shridhar

- My most favorite number in the album. Vijay Prakash is a talent to be given more priority. I dont see him singing much. We need him! His rendition in Man Mohini from Yuvvraaj is a good start, but alas, the movie bombed! Fiqrana has a very complicated tune, but its easy on the ears and not to mention, catchy! The way Vijay sings, and Shreya joins him is just fabulous! Mark my words, there are going to be many clones of this song soon, be it in Hindi Industry or Tamil Industry. The interludes are simple, but the tune is not. I guess A.R.Rahman wanted us to give attention to the tune more. Vijay Prakash has done a magnificent job!

Ratings : 9.9/10

4. Bhoola Tujhe - Rashid Ali

- Starts off very softly, the violin (?) caressing your heart carefully. Its goes on close to a minute, but you wont realize it was that long, typical A.R.Rahman eh? Then the female vocal comes in "ohhhhh" along the guitars and Rashid starts. It will simply reminds you a number from Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. Its a very simple yet powerful song. It has the English number feel, but knitted well with Indian flavors. The song has a very strong ground with its hummable tune, and neat arrangements. Not to forget Rashid's unique voice. The ending with the female's vocal, just magical!

Ratings : 8/10

5. Blue Theme - Blaaze, Raqeeb Alam, Sonu Kakkar, Jaspreet Singh, Neha Kakkar & Dilshad

- Alright, this is soon to be my ringtone! I just love the energy in the song! Its unbelievable that A.R.Rahman, at his age, could compose something such as this. Not degrading A.R.Rahman for his age, but numbers like this are usually composed by the younger bloods. The creative " Buluuuueee", the electric guitar (??) the female vocal which goes very seductive, and appears from no where. And then, later towards the end, the tempo of the song increases and rushes as if its actually running. Its just marvelous! my personal favorite as well.

Rating : 9/10

6. Rehnuma - Shreya Ghoshal, Sonu Nigam & Neeraj Shridhar

- A.R.Rahman has been great in his Jazz numbers, be it Iruvar's Vennila Vennila or Sillunu Oru Kadhal's title song, or even in the latest Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na's Tu Bole. But wait, those was authentic jazz numbers, but Rehnuma is a fusion i believe. It starts off very jazz'ly, but progressed into a very Indianized number, with the beats being somewhat similar to A.R.Rahman's Yedho Yedho from Ennaku 20 Unnake 18 number. The interludes are just too mesmerizing! Its hard not to like this number. Shreya, i seriously salute you for this song! U have made me enjoyed it thoroughly with your rendition. Sonu as usual, does his best! This song will take time to grow on the common listeners, who are used to the typical song patterns.

Rating : 9/10

7. Yaar Mila Tha - Udit Narayan & Madhushree

- Aah, i know what you all are thinking, that im going to give this song a 10/10 rating and praise Madhushree from start to end. No! Haha. , lets get into the song. It starts of playfully, and then the chant " Ah Thak Ah Theena, Ah Theen theen theena" comes in. You will be surprised, it sounds new, but great! And Madhushree comes in the picture, gracing the song with her silky honey voice. Udit Narayan does a great job as well, i feel the power he gave the song is very good. Its visible that both Madhushree and Udit Narayan was living the song. Madhushree was giving emotion for each word and changing her tone adequately. Loved her " Ohh Oh ohhh". If you see clearly, this song doesnt fit in this Album, its like the most Indianized number among all. Its like a typical 1980s Hindi number with a pinch of contemporary's music. As soon as the song is over, you will be murmuring" Ah Thak Ah Theena, Ah Theen theen theena", whether you like it or not! Hah!

Rating : 8.5/10

Verdict : I will call this album the MOST satisfying album from A.R.Rahman in years. The last album that i liked all the songs from A.R.Rahman's album was Kangalal Kaithi Sei (2003). This is truly a dream come true! Sorry i couldnt review the lyrics as well because i do not understand Hindi. What should i say, BLUE is truly a masterpiece. Go grab your copies now! Its not a BLUE album, but a RED album, its HOT and ROCKING!

Overall rating : 9.5/10

Vinnaithaandi Varuvaiya Audio Rights Sold to Sony Music

Greetings my A.R.Rahman fans brothers and sisters, the great news is, that the audio rights of VTV (Vinnaithaandi Varuvaiya) was sold today, according to Sify.com. I Will quote its news here,

Sony Music grabs VTV & Goa
By Moviebuzz | Friday, 18 September , 2009, 08:33

Two of the most eagerly awaited musicals of the year, Gautham Menon’s Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya, the Simbu-Trisha starrer which has music by the emperor AR Rahman and Venkat Prabhu’s Goa, with Yuvan Shankar Raja has been taken by Sony Music.

A spokesperson of Sony Music said: “ VTV and Goa are two of the most eagerly awaited tracks in Kollywood. Gautham Menon is doing his first film with ARR, and the combination is sure to rock. Goa has the proven hit pair of Venkat and Yuvan, which is sure to create magic.”

Both the films have been snapped by Sony Music at record prices, especially VTV, which has touched an eight figure mark.

So whats the bad news? The bad news is that Director Gautham Menon is planning to simultaneously release the Tamil version and Telugu version together. Mind you the Telugu version's shooting was just started with popular Star Nagarajun's son in cast. If Gautham is to release the Tamil version earlier, this only means the Telugu version WILL NOT see good business. And no doubt the shooting for the Telugu version is going to take another 3 -4 months, and that means NO TAMIL ALBUM from ARR this year for us folks! That is really depressing! I was seriously looking forward for the film's music eagerly. Looks like my wait needs to prolong huh. Well, i really hope its for the best and worth. Gautham and A.R.Rahman can never go wrong!

Hey guys... i feel i should post it here, haha. Did u guys ever saw or heard of this beauty? She acted in 2 Tamil movies, 1 is Bharathiraja's Bommalattam and A.R.Gandhi Krishna's Aanadha Thandavam. I got to watch Aanandha Thandavam lately ( again, highlight on the LATE, haha)... and this girl simply made me speechless! What a beauty?? Esp whereby she will perform a Bharathanatyam show in the movie, goodness...! She looked awfully, awfully beautiful!! Its just me with such 'South Indian-ish' beauties with Traditional costumes. Lol! i should consider finding my soul mate in Tamil Nadu! Here are some of her pictures...But im not sure if she is a Southern, though she looks allot like one.

Unakkul Naane - Pacchakili Muthucharam Mix (Madhushree and Bombay Jayashree)

Unakkul Naane - Pacchakili Muthucharam Mix (Madhushree and Bombay Jayashree)

Alright, before u have any idea on why i ever did a remix on that song, let me tell u this. ITS NOT A REMIX!! haha!

What i mean mix as in i did a mix between the voices, Bombay Jayashree and Madhushree.

As we know, Bombay Jayashree's verson was the one which was used in the movie, though Madhushree's version is the original number. So i have mixed between both the singers, as in as if they took turns to sing the lines one after another. I have took the best portion of Bombay Jayashree and best portion of Madhushree and joint them together. Here is the link. Please feel free to comment. :)

Movie : Pachaikili Muthucharam
Song : Unakkul Naan
Singer(s) : Madhushree, Bombay Jayashree
Mixed by : Dinesh Scaran

Arunthathi ... Excellent movie!

Alright guys, i know im a little late in watching films. Haha. Because i watch films when i get the time or when its on T.V. And thanks to Astro, we get to watch latest movies after say 3 months of its release. Im talking about the Tamil films here. So today i got to watch this 'Arunthathi' movie, my frens used to hype about it before, i know. They recommended me to watch the film, but i just ignored.

So i saw the movie today, my goodness, i was blown. Not to say its was a brilliant movie, but particularly, the actress, Anushka, in the role of Arunthathi(Jekkama), WOWW!! such a STRONG and SOLID character! The character was made for her face. She had the strict looks of a Queen, the braveness, the strength, etc etc... AWESOME!! But yeah, he r dance was a little off.

Another scene where it really got my attention, where she was dancing this traditional dance which involves the shawl and drums, which she danced and killed the guy with the shawl. Ahh, i dunno how to explain, but damn, that part the graphics was savadi! haha. If im not mistaken, this is an exact adoption from the Chinese movie - House of flying daggers. Exactly the same, but it suited well for the scene in the movie.

Seriously, i would dare to say this movie stood out JUST BECAUSE of this JAKKAMA character handled by Anuskha. Please, please watch this movie for her. Its too good...

And yeah, the story is something different.
