Endhiran Album Review by Dinesh Scaran
ENDHIRAN AUDIO REVIEW by Dinesh Scaran
Shankar and A.R.Rahman combination has been rocking ever since the first film they joined hands together, Gentleman (1993). Every single album that came out from their hands together has never gone wrong. Its a Super Hit all the way. Infact, the album Boys (2003) is the album that brought A.R.Rahman back in the top position after a very disappointing career period in the Tamil Industry from the 2001 till 2003, where Boys happened. And what about Endhiran, It easily surpases many albums of this combo, holding its position in the top 3 of the Shankar-A.R.Rahman combination. The album, as a whole, holds this magic, that has never been heard from the Tamil industry, why, even from A.R.Rahman himself in years. I will let you know why i say this as i go on reviewing on each song.
1. Pudhiya Manitha
S. P. Balasubramaniam, A. R. Rahman, Khathija Rahman
- Let me be frank, this is my least fav number in the album. Though it shows its brilliance throughout the song, it just never clicked with me. Never a fan of these kind of genre. What ever it is, its a song that can be composed only by A.R.Rahman. S.P.Bala sounds fantastic, even after decades in the industry. A.R.Rahman's daughter, Khathija, sounds awfully sweet! A very unique voice, she will soon make it big. Soothing texture of voice, that goes well with the mood of the song. The beats in the song, is very subtle, slow and layered, but gives the impact of powerful beats. You will need a good sound system to know what I'm talking about. I can only imagine the magic it will spark when watching it on screen. Vairamuthu lyrics just shows what he is made of. "Yen thandai mozhi, Tamil Mozhi" - My Father's (mother) tongue, is Tamil" as the Robot is created by a man. Creative indeed! As i mentioned, the beats and composition has a very robotic feel, yet soulful. A.R.Rahman has done a work of God on earth here. If you want to know and feel a robot's soul, listen to this song. A.R.Rahman has created a SOUL for the robots. The song has no particular structure, you will only realize about its structure after about listening to it 10 times or so. Once u have grasp the structure, the song dwells in well. It easily earns a :
9.0 / 10
2. Kadhal Anukkal
Vijay Prakash, Shreya Ghoshal
- I still remember listening to it for the first time, I thought it was Hariharan and Sadhana Sargam crooning for this song. Im not sure why the singers were made to sing in these singer's style, but nevertheless its a marvelous song. My second most Favorite song in the album. Everything about this song is just Feel Good. The song has a very silky love emotion, yet peppy. Try singing the song, the tune is just fantastic! Vijay Prakash sounds good, though reminded me of Hariharan in most the parts. A very promising singer, after his magnificent re-entry with Hosana, from Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya, under A.R.Rahman's composition. The guitar strings, just plays with your veins. Beautiful composition! Love the rendition of Vijay Prakash here and there. Shreya Goshal sounded very Sadhana Sargam'ish here. Not sure why, but her own identity is not clearly seen here, for me atleast. Vairamuthu lyrics, another highlight. All those Sci entific terms, used to be connected with Love and emotion, needs a special mention. Fantastic work indeed. The interludes, are just magnificent! The first interlude, has that
Irish feel. Mind me for my ignorance, if im not mistaken, the Irish Flute? It has a feel good moment there. I specifically love the second interlude, very haunting feel. Just from the moment it started, you will be brought into another world, and make you shake your body smoothly unknowingly. Lovely!

3. Irumbile Oru Idhaiyam
A. R. Rahman, Kash'n'Krissy
- I have no words for this song. Simply marvelous! A.R.Rahman just clearly shows that he can compose ANY genre of music, any time, any day despite being a matured man. Such a youthful song, have funky rendition by the master himself. I must agree, i was never a fan of A.R.Rahman when it comes to his voice, sparing a couple of songs like Thai Manne Vanakkam, Vellai pookal and Antha Arabic Kadhal Ooram. These 3 are the only songs i liked and feel he was the ONLY one could render those songs. After all this years (from 2002, Vellai Pook al), now i have felt that A.R.Rahman's voice spelled his magic once again on me. The first question that came to my mind is that, is this A.R.Rahman singing? Such youthfulness, such funkiness, such energy in the voice and song. These girls, Kash and Krissy, wonderful voices! Such sexiness in their rendition. It just casts a spell on you easily! You cant help but shaking your head for the whole song, and especially for their portions. Fantastic English Rap style and indeed a great way to sway into the Tamil Music Industry with this song. Lyrics is written by Vairamuthu's son, Karky. While many said his lyrics are plain, i on the other hand finds it otherwise. Loved the " Irumbile, Oru Idhayam Muzhaikuthey" - " Is a heart forming in this STEEL material ? " Very lively lyrics and no doubt, suitable for the movie's concept. Try listening to this song, using the Original CD ofcource, while driving your car, windows down. Try it, and let m
e know. That feel is just fantastic. Loved the pause that comes between the " Mudhal murai..... (pause) Kaadhal aazhaikatho..." This is what they call a perfect match of lyrics and its tune. Such fine details was done. Another remarkable part is the the portion where Kash and Krissy goes " Hey Bo... Mayakathey...." and the robotic shutting down sound dies out. Nicely done!
10/10
4. Chitti Dance Showcase
Pradeep Vijay, Pravin Mani, Yogi. B
- Tts a very powerful bit. Very creative composition, having a the Carnatic fusion in, and also the Sympony music alog. Its my ringtone and message tone for my phone. Very funky and electrifying. This would be ideal for any dance movement for any shows in the future to test the dancer's capability in all the genre of songs. It was well choreographed in the Endhiran Audio Launch event that was done in Malaysia, 31st July 2010 that was had Actress Poorna shaking her hips to it. I can already imagine the spectacular show in screen for this song! The Robot is going to dance for all the genre, in Shankar's style.
8/10
5. Arima Arima
Hariharan, Sadhana Sargam
- Now here are the originals doing their original work! Fantastic rendition by Hariharan. Love the way it starts with the horn, very suitable for a Rajini intro song. Could be easily mistaken for an Introduction song for the Superstar. And it goes on with the Chorus singing their part. Very stern and serious song. Love the seriousness in Hariharan's voice. While many other preferred S.P.Bala for this song, i feel Hariharan has done a very very satisfying work. This is suppose to be a counterpart for Vaaji Vaaji of Sivaji. I would anyday prefer Arima Arima over Vaaji Vaaji, despite Vaaji Vaaji having my favorite singer crooning there, Madhushree. Sadhana Sargam did her work well, though very very minimal participation from her. Guessing this is all in all a Rajini song, thus a female portion singing her duet was less important. The "aaahh" of Sadhana Sargam is mesmerizing. The tune is very very addictive. The horns that comes in various part of the song gives the grandeur sound the song acquires. Vairamuthu has done a commendable job. Again, i learn a Tamil word from a song, Arima - which means lion in Tamil. It had playful lyrics like "Aissekke Ice vekkathey" as Aishwarya Rai's nick is Aish and it sounds like Ice thus the lyrics. Nice work. This song is by far the most powerful song ive heard in years. Another feather in A.R.Rahman's cap!
10/10
6. Kilimanjaro
Javed Ali, Chinmayi
- I did not understand ANYTHING about this song when i first heard the song. The only words i knew what they were singing were Kilimanjaro and Mohenjadaro. Chinmayi sounded different. I mistaken her for K.S.Chitra
for a moment. And her " Enniko Nee" was sexy. Javed Ali's voice is truly, truly fantastic. But i did not understand a word he was saying throughout the song, until i read the lyric booklet. Its nice to see Javed Ali singing a Tamil song under A.R.Rahman. Despite these flaws in the pronunciation department, the song rocks your socks, as how a teenager would describe it (im not one, though!). Love the live beats it had (0.33-0.35) which comes through the song, and the tempo of the song is very appropriate. If you did not realize, the "tik tik tik" sound that comes before the "Enniko Nee" is done by Chinmayi herself, its not an instrument. This was mentioned in her blog. Both the interludes are filled with the Tribal chants, initially it sounded plain, but as time passes by, and the more u listen to it, you will get a grip on its form and enjoy it. Lyrics was very very shocking, in the sense such lyrics can appear in such mega film. Every Shankar film usually has a folk song, and normally its lyrics is very classy, but this is not the case of this song. Vairamuthu would have easily done a better job (read Uppu Karuvadu, Andangkaka). Nevertheless, the magical music of A.R.Rahman takes care and diverts the listeners attention towards the music and arrangements of the songs, and ofcource, the fantastic vocals of Javed Ali and Chinmayi. Another worth mentioning of the song, is the "Aha Aha"... Very cute and addictive. Once the song is done playing, you yourself will be singing that portion.
9.5/10
7. Boom Boom Robo Da
Yogi. B, Keerthi Sagathia, Swetha Mohan, Tanvi Shah
- The song which was suppose to have Madhushree crooning to it, was replaced by Swetha Mohan in the final product. No complains though, after giving it a good listen for a long time. This song is something very fresh in A.R.Rahman's camp, as it has the Malaysian fame Rapper, Yogi B crooning to a full fledge song in A.R.Rahman's composition (First one being a rap bit in Ghajini, the Hindi version). His rap is fresh to hear, after the often A.R.Rahman-Blaaze combo that has been going on for 8 years. The rap lyrics are nice, explaining well about the Robot. " Vaaiyi Unde aanal Vayire Illai, Pechu unde aanal mooche illai" - Has a mouth, but no stomach. Has the ability to talk but no breath. Good work by Karky. Swetha's voice is as sweet as sugar cube, as she sings her portion well. The tune of Swetha's portion, is actually taken from A.R.Rahman's composition 5 years back, from the song "Thigu Thigu" - Ah Aah (2005). Specifically the portion " Eh Eh Eh Thaley Thaley Thaley, Eh Aaney Aaney Aaney....." that was sung by Sadhana Sargam. The Arabic flavor music bit (1.15-1.23) is worth mentioning. It will provoke you want to move along with that part. Very very addictive and seductive. The second interlude, handled by Keerthi and Tanvi, in French (??) is nice! A song which will be a favorite among the teenagers, no doubt.
9.5/10
Overall the album is a clear winner and a clear super hit product. It has the typical Shankar - A.R.Rahman combo power, where can it go wrong! The only question i have, during 2001, i read in Guitarist Prasanna's website that he has played a song, consisting of 10 or 12 guitar for the Project Robot, composed by A.R.Rahman. Where is that song?? Hope its somewhere in the movie as it sounds too good to be just kept aside. The singers choice was fantastic, especially letting Hariharan singing the Arima Arima (what a singer!) and Javed Ali and Chinmayi for Kilimanjaro. Javed Ali for Rajinikanth, sounds fresh! A.R.Rahman has done all the needs to secure the movie to be a hit, giving the correct hype and flavor for the movie. Having these gigantic songs here with a director like Shankar, one doesnt need to feel insecured, as what most Tamil songs of A.R.Rahman's gets butchered by the Directors giving us the not-so-suitable screening and picturisation for the songs. Shankar has always make an A.R.Rahman song extraordinaire. The lyrics are well written by Vairamuthu in all his songs, after a very ordinary work in A.R.Rahman's Raavanan. This album holds NO "Rajinikanth Movie influence" anywhere. This is fully a Shankar - A.R.Rahman product. Salutions to Rajinikanth for giving in his popularity and his usual stlyes away and giving these gigantic figures, A.R.Rahman and Shankar to do their part 100% without having to consider much of the usual Rajini Masala which was visible even in Shankar - A.R.Rahman combo album, Sivaji the Boss which was released 3 years ago. Rajinikanth is indeed a SuperStar, and SuperHuman!
What are you waiting for? Go grab the Original CD and experience this one of a Kind album by yourself. Do not rely on Mp3s to experience the exotic feel of each song. The original Cd has more to offer, if u listen to them using it. There are a few minor vocals that came in the song Arima Arima, which i only realized when i heard the Original CD. Go figure that part out with your cd!
Overall rating : 10/10 - Extremely Satisfying album.
